Historical Background

In order to understand the company philosophy of ShopConsult by Umdasch more clearly, it is necessary to consider the company's development over the past years.

The development of ShopConsult by Umdasch is closely linked with the company history of the parent company, Umdasch Shop-Concept GmbH.

1868 The company was founded as a sawmill and carpentry business. It developed steadily and was rebuilt following damage during World War II.

1956 The direction of the company was given a dynamic impetus by the engineer Josef Umdasch. It started to specialise in the product fields Umdasch Shopfitting and Doka Formwork Technology. The first shopfittings were completed of wood.

1961 The company was transformed into a joint-stock company (AG), a development which showed the seeds for the development of the consultancy branches. Of course, much of today's knowledge of the retail trade and the associated courses of action were as yet unknown, but even in those days it was noted that "the staff of Umdasch was particularly good at listening", and thus that the different requirements of the various retailers were accurately recognised and taken into consideration.

1968-86 The founding of companies in Switzerland, Germany and Italy and the transformation from a seller's to a purchaser's market made it even more important to recognise new trends and customer demands and to react to the resulting changes at the planning stage.

1987-99 The founding of companies in the United Kingdom and France. Increasingly, the range of services provided by Umdasch starts to develop away from production to become a full-range service provider. The increasing influence of globalisation on the retail branch also demands new structures in the development of concepts. Within the parent company, a group of experts from a wide range of disciplines comes together to form a Consultancy Team. The procedures developed by this team, starting with a comprehensive analysis of the situation at the outset and the related strategy with an appropriate design has become increasingly important for our customers and increasingly determines the success of new retail concepts.

2000 After this long period of development in Umdasch's Management Consultancy, ShopConsult by Umdasch was founded as an independent company, in order to meet the trade's growing demand for management advisory services.

2001 Umdasch AG acquires Assmann Ladenbau of Leibnitz. In Umdasch Shop-Concept and Assmann, two firms that have successfully gone against the trend in their sector of the market in recent years have come together.  Their different areas of concentration – food in the case of Assmann and non-food in the case of Umdasch Shop-Concept – complement each other well, as do their relevant stand-alone technologies.

2002 After a few years’ careful preparation work, Umdasch Shop-Concept is setting its activities in France on a new footing of Umdasch Shop-Concept SAS.

2004 With the founding of the branch offices Umdasch Shop-Concept Middle East in Dubai and Umdasch Shop-Concept Russia in Moscow, the Umdasch Shopfitting Group strengthens its international activities.

2005 The group's systematic expansion in Italy gathers speed with the takeover of Koncret Design, a firm of shopfitters headquartered in Parma, thus enrichng the international brand portfolio with italian design competence.

2006 In 2006 the wood processing capacity of our factory in České Budějovice was increased. We now have 140 employees working there. Once the extension programme has been completed in 2006-2007, the factory buildings will cover an area of 40,500 m².

2007 A company is being established for our Middle East branch. The Regional Sourcing Center Dubai will commence operations in May 2007. A wood processing plant, a paint shop and a glass workshop are being set up. The new factory will initially employ a staff of 20 people.

In the last 50 years Umdasch has outfitted over 50,000 shops in over 50 countries.
